A Two-Day Summer Vacation Itinerary
Two Harbors, MN, is centrally located to several of the top-rated attractions in Minnesota, including Split Rock Lighthouse, Gooseberry Falls, and Duluth’s Canal Park. But you’ll rarely have to leave the city limits to experience a quintessential North Shore getaway! If you’re searching for one of the best summer vacations in Minnesota, look no further than Superior Shores Resort! To ensure that your summer vacation to Two Harbors is nothing short of flawless, we’ve created a handy two-day itinerary.
8 a.m. – Don’t forget to fuel up before venturing to nearby Split Rock Lighthouse State Park with the most important meal of the day at Kamloops Restaurant & Lounge. Breakfast is our forte here at Kamloops as our culinary team crafts delicious early-morning delights. Try our stack of fluffy buttermilk pancakes or the steaming breakfast skillet complete with scrambled eggs, cheese, diced ham, peppers, and onions on top crispy hashbrowns.
9:45 a.m. – After a satisfying breakfast, drive up to Split Rock’s Pebble Beach, the premier hidden gem in Minnesota. Skip stones on the beach, snap photographs of the lighthouse, and explore beautiful Ellingson Island. Don’t be afraid to get your feet wet – the panoramic Lake Superior views on Ellingson Island are spectacular! But, of course, you don’t want to leave the park without a stop at the lighthouse.
11:25 a.m. – The next stop on your quintessential North Shore getaway is Gooseberry Falls State Park, home to one of the most iconic waterfalls in Minnesota! After posing for pictures near the Middle Falls, we recommend strolling along the Riverview Trail, which follows the Gooseberry River en route to Agate Beach. If you’re hoping to hike inside this beautiful park, this trail map comes in handy!
1:25 p.m. – Hopefully, your morning activities have replenished your appetite at this point. Louise’s Place is the perfect spot for a light, mid-day lunch. With hand-woven quilts and old family photos on the wall, Louise’s looks and feels like a trip to Grandma’s house. While many locals visit Louise’s for the homemade baked goods, the two-cheese, three-meat club sandwich on grilled cranberry rye bread is simply to-die-for!
2:45 p.m. – Treat the whole family to some well-deserved, much-needed fun right here at Superior Shores Resort, where you’ll discover an outdoor pool, hot tub, cabana bar, gas fire pit, and a wide variety of games, such as cornhole, bocce, and horseshoes.
6:30 p.m. – Dry off, throw on some dinner attire, and drive back into downtown for an elegant dinner at McQuade’s Pub and Grill, one of the newest Two Harbors restaurants. McQuade’s rotating dinner specials will not disappoint! Serving everything from baked, shrimp-stuffed salmon to 14-ounce New York strip steaks, the culinary creations at McQuade’s are worth the short drive.
8 p.m. – A slice of award-winning pie at Betty’s should always be on the docket! Hopefully, there’s still fresh-baked bumbleberry crunch pie on the shelf.
8:50 p.m. – Open a bottle of wine, and enjoy the Lake Superior views around dusk on your private balcony.
9:40 p.m. – Slip back inside, and start up your private, two-person hot tub – there’s nothing better after a jam-packed day than a warm Whirlpool bath! On-site amenities like these are just one of the many reasons why we provide some of the best summer vacations on the North Shore!
8 a.m. – Pack a picnic that the whole family will enjoy. Turkey sandwiches and chicken wraps typically go over well with the kids!
8:30 a.m. – Start day two with a mocha latte and fresh-baked scone at Cedar Coffee Company, located in a secluded, picturesque wilderness setting.
9:10 a.m. – Treat the whole gang to 18 holes at Lakeview National Golf Course, a family-friendly hidden gem. Fourteen of the 18 holes feature sprawling Lake Superior views! As if golf wasn’t hard enough, these gorgeous views are distracting (to say the least). If golf isn’t your game of choice, the family can always split up and utilize our on-site pools again.
1:40 p.m. – Enjoy a lakefront picnic near the jaw-dropping Two Harbors Lighthouse. There are plenty of spots along the south shoreline to throw down a blanket. The best summer vacations should always include a waterfront picnic filled with yummy treats, beautiful views, and occasional giggles.
2:45 p.m. – Book a reservation for the two-hour, 3 p.m. day sail at Amicus Adventure Sailing, based out of the nearby Knife River Marina. Sailing in Lake Superior during summer’s golden haze is a magical experience. Steer the vessel, snap photographs, and enjoy the sprawling coastal views.
5:15 p.m. – Stop at Russ Kendall’s Smoke House before driving back up to Two Harbors, MN. Their smoked salmon is the perfect snack food (make sure to de-bone the filets before consuming).
5:40 p.m. – Purchase a flight of award-winning craft beer at Castle Danger Brewery, the reigning, two-time “Ultimate Minnesota Beer Bracket” winner. Three of our favorite ales include the well-balanced Ode IPA, smooth 17-7 Pale Ale, and rich George Hunter Stout.
6:40 p.m. – Sit down for dinner and drinks at Kamloops Restaurant & Lounge. You simply cannot go wrong with any of our of Northern Minnesota staples, such as the signature Burlington Burger, blue-cheese-smothered Kamloops Chicken, and garlic white wine shrimp skewers. The best summer vacations typically involve a memorable meal or two – and a lake-view dinner at Kamloops is second-to-none!
8:30 p.m. – There should still be plenty of daylight remaining to hunt for agates along our rocky Flood Bay beach.
9 p.m. – After discovering a couple of shiny agates, stick around Flood Bay for a complimentary lakeside
bonfire. We provide all the campfire essentials, including dry wood, lighter fluid, and Adirondack chairs. Feel free to bring along materials for s’mores!
