Minnesota’s North Shore is one of the premier year-round tourist destinations in North America! There is no “off-season” up here. Even in the wintertime, we offer some of the nation’s best skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and dog sledding! But there is unquestionably one season in Two Harbors that attracts nature photographers, hikers, and couples: autumn. There’s something genuinely magical about the combination of crisp northern Minnesota air, stunning fall foliage, and the intoxicating natural aroma of the forest! Superior Shores Resort rests on the serene rocky shoreline of Lake Superior in the quintessential town of Two Harbors. Unlike most Lake Superior resorts, we have the premier restaurant in the city limits, awe-inspiring vistas, a fantastic location for your day-tripping activities, and supreme hospitality! Start planning your autumn North Shore hiking adventure by reading further about these three trails.
Oberg Mountain Loop
The best hiking trail in the entire state of Minnesota awaits at the end of a steep, winding dirt road between Tofte and Lutsen. The Oberg Mountain loop remains a hidden gem despite offering three of the five best fall overlooks on the North Shore! You’ll know you’ve almost reached the Oberg Mountain trailhead when you’ve driven so far up Onion River Road that you’re considering turning back.
The loop itself is a moderate three-mile hike that is often conquered by children, the elderly, and pets. You’re going to sweat and feel a tiny burn on some of the steep inclines, but you’ll cross the “finish line” with a better appreciation of our colorful wilderness! The trail provides sweeping valley, Lake Superior, and Oberg Lake views. Take your time and appreciate the beauty at each lookout. Hold onto your hats on the eastern edge of the mountain – wind gusts of 50 mph often whistle through the mountain air! One of the most rewarding moments of the trail is the brisk walk through the tall forest. Pause to peer at the treetops and admire the splendid mixture of colors as dying leaves rain down from high above!
Gitchi Gummi Trail – Gooseberry Falls State Park
Gooseberry Falls State Park is one of the top tourist destinations in the Midwest! The ideal way to truly experience the splendor of this beautiful state park is to hike up the Gitchi Gummi Trail. The Gitchi Gummi Trail is a quiet, unfrequented hidden gem that slowly ascends up the north side of the Gooseberry River gorge. This colorful, slightly challenging trail has sweeping views of the river, Lake Superior, and Agate Beach. This loop allows hikers to distance themselves from the popular, overcrowded falls. While we highly recommend the Gitchi Gummi Trail for its stunning color and valley views, the nearby River View Trail shouldn’t be skipped either! This winding trail follows the river that opens into the vast lake at Agate Beach.
Baptism River Gorge – Tettegouche State Park
As previously mentioned in the “Top 5 Waterfalls on the North Shore,” Tettegouche State Park is best experienced by hiking up the Baptism River gorge! The hike is no easy accomplishment because the water level must be low and the current should be sluggish. Only skillful and confident hikers should attempt the riverwalk journey. Climb down into the gorge near the bridge on the southern side of the river and begin the exhilarating adventure to the High Falls. There are so many boulders and large rocks in the river that you’ll likely stay dry for much of the hike. You’ll have to climb Cascade Falls and Two Step Falls which shouldn’t be an issue if the water level is low. The stunning gorge views are among the best on the North Shore! Every step offers panoramic views of the high cliffs, colorful forestry, and unique limestone boulders!
Lake Superior Resorts
Picturesque Superior Shores Resort is a short drive from Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock Lighthouse, and Castle Danger Brewing! Finish each evening in the Kamloops Restaurant & Lounge for pan-seared walleye, shrimp scampi, and Swedish meatballs. All other Lake Superior resorts strive to meet the standard set by our pristine lakeside paradise!
