While we’ve enjoyed higher than average temperatures this winter, there’s been no shortage of snow here at Superior Shores Resort. Minnesota’s North Shore has been bombarded with several feet of fresh powder thanks to a handful of heavy snowstorms in December. And there are several reasons to get excited about these ideal snowmobiling, skiing, snowshoeing, and snowball fighting conditions. Unlike most rural Minnesota destinations, the North Shore is packed with jaw-dropping overlooks, state parks, and quintessential small towns, many of which can be easily accessed from the lengthy C.J. Ramstad North Shore State Trail. This should come as no surprise, but many of the prettiest Northern Minnesota snowmobile trails are a short backcountry ride from our rustic yet luxuriant Lake Superior lodging.
The C.J. Ramstad North Shore State Trail
In 2009, the North Shore State Trail was named after a local publisher, editor, and snowmobile enthusiast who graciously helped spread the word about the Arrowhead Region’s glorious Northern Minnesota snowmobile trails. The “C.J. Ramstad” stretches a whopping 143 miles from Duluth’s hills all the way to Grand Marais’ shores. As you’ll quickly notice on this detailed, DNR-curated map, the Ramstad now connects with dozens of less-frequented backcountry trails. This secluded, undeniably awe-inspiring stretch of hill country meanders past lost lakes, untouched forestry, and frozen rivers. While there are several parking lots along the journey, guests at Superior Shores Resort can readily motor onto the Two Harbors Corridor Trail virtually from our main lodge. The westward Corridor Trail plods along the northern edge of town en route to the Ramstad.
Northern Minnesota Snowmobile Trails: The Top 5 Pit Stops
The Ramstad’s interconnected trail system weaves its way to several landmarks, including Tettegouche State Park, Duluth’s Lester Park, and, of course, the charming city of Grand Marais. However, the best pit stops typically lie beside secluded destinations that involve some (but not a lot) of winter hiking. We know these classic Northern Minnesota snowmobile trails like the back of our hands. So, we’ve selected five unique stops along the Shore that are perfect for a picnic, group photos, and some overdue stretching.
- Ellingson Island / Split Rock Lighthouse
- Cascade River State Park
- Gooseberry Falls State Park
- Devil’s Kettle Falls
- Caribou Lake
